Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop

Have you ever wanted to go back in time and experience something people talk about?  I know that I have, one of the most common thing I hear people talking about are the old fashioned soda shops. These were usually set up in the corner drug store's in your local town, before the chain pharmacies became popular.

From what I have seen Soda Shop's are a thing of the past.  I never had the chance to experience one because they were just simply not around when I was growing up.  I have heard from my Grandparents that was the only way you could get a Cherry Coke because they would actually mix the cherry flavor to the Coke before it readily available like it is today.

Alas I have found a local restaurant that embodies what an old fashioned soda shop might be like. That place is Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop located in South End right along the light rail.  When you walk into the restaurant it is like stepping back in time.  With the long marble counter top right inside the front door with the soda fountain behind the counter where they still make phosphates, which are hand stirred beverages like an old fashioned Cherry Coke.

They also specialize in Malts, Milkshakes, Sundaes, and even Ice Cream Floats.  I do not know many restaurants that serve Ice Cream Floats not even Ice Cream shops.  When I tried this place I went for lunch and tried the honey pecan chicken.  I highly recommend this dish, it is a fried chicken breast drizzled with honey and topped with chopped pecans, it is served with mashed potatoes and homemade broccoli casserole.  I am not one for the sweet and savory combination but this was awesome, I think mostly because it was not overly sweet and the broccoli casserole is fantastic and reminds me of my Mom's.

If you are looking to go back in time or even re-live the soda shop experience you had while growing up then look no further than Pike's Old Fashioned Soda Shop.  I was able to find a great video showcasing Pike's and dives more into the history of the restaurant.

Thomas Street Tavern

Today I was meeting a friend for lunch and we could not decide where to go.  So we decided to venture to Thomas Street Tavern.  Thomas Street Tavern is nestled in heart of Plaza Midwood in Charlotte right next to Dish.

Thomas Street is a very eclectic bar and restaurant.  You walk in to the restaurant and there are the original hardwood floors throughout the building and dark wood booths.  The bar is to your right as you walk in and is crafted out of wood as well and is very spacious so there is no lack of seating at the bar.

Also there is a jukebox and pool tables so you can relax while having a drink with friends.  If you walk through the restaurant and go out the back door to their patio.  The patio is an awesome hangout space with ping pong tables and their own bar out there which makes for a great time when the weather is nice.  They even have a fire pit for when the weather gets cooler so it makes being outside tolerable.

Their menu is top notch as well.  I usually go for lunch and they are not overly crowded so it makes getting in and out in an hour a breeze.  For lunch today I had the Commonwealth roast beef sandwich with their house made potato salad.  The roast beef is always very juicy and tender and you can tell its freshly sliced and not in the lunch meat way either.  It is served on a Nova roll with melted Swiss cheese and is served with house made horseradish sauce and au jus.  One note about the horseradish, go light on it because is very spicy.  I like spicy food but I always tend to overdue the horseradish and today ended up almost crying!

Overall Thomas Street Tavern is an awesome place to hangout and have a beer with friends.  It has also been featured in the Charlotte Observer blog 30 Bars in 30 Days.  Next time you need a fun place to go head over to Plaza Midwood to a great bar and restaurant.

BBQ in Charlotte

Everyone knows that North Carolina is known for its BBQ, most would think some of the best comes from the Eastern part of the state.  I am here to tell you that is not necessarily the case.  Some of the best BBQ I have had comes from Charlotte at Midwood Smokehouse.

With many offerings in and around the Charlotte area it can be hard to find the right one that offers the best food.  I know I have tried many so-called BBQ restaurants but once I tried Midwood Smokehouse I cannot eat any others.  They are a local restaurant that produces high quality smoked meats that are fresh, juicy, and full of flavor from the smoker straight to your table.

According to their website Midwood Smokehouse employs a seasoned pit master that oversees the seasoning and smoking of all their products.  The founder has traveled to all the BBQ hot spots such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Kansas City MO, and Memphis TN to craft Midwood Smokehouse's menu.  They also use a state of the art smoker that does not utilize any gas or electricity to produce smoke or heat, they only use and burn hardwood hickory logs 24 hours 7 days a week to produce the highest quality product possible.

With many different menu options such as their bulk menu to fulfill all of your catering or party needs.  Their main menu is fantastic and one of my favorite is the Brisket Sandwich.  It is made with smoked brisket, midwood sauce, blue cheese crumbles, and smoked red onions on Texas Toast.  The brisket used is some of the best I have ever had and the smoked onions give the sandwich a great smoky taste that melds together with all of the other flavors.

If you are looking for a great BBQ experience you do not have to travel to another state.  All you have to do is go to Charlotte in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood or the newest location in Ballantyne.  This is a fantastic local BBQ restaurant with fresh meats and sides and don't forget to grab your favorite local brew while there with many Charlotte breweries on tap.

Guest Post!

I would like to welcome everyone back to my page.  I am going to change the pace today and feature a guest post from a friend of mine who's band I featured in an earlier blog post.  I would like to introduce my good friend and bassist for the local band Pluto for Planet Levin Shackelford.  Levin is going to talk about what inspired him to be a part of the local music scene and talk about some of his favorite local bands as well.

I had never been nervous before. Not with music. But there I sat, in my truck listening to a group of musicians warming up inside of a rehearsal space. The level of skill on the instruments was higher than anything I’d experienced. It was like a cocktail made of top shelf liquor. A drink that seemed so complete already, I wondered what my bass playing could add. “Deep breath,” I thought, remembering the advice my Dad, Robbie Shackelford, a lifelong performing musician gave me once. “Just relax,” Dad said, “Music is a gift. It will take you places you never thought you’d go, show you more about yourself than you’ve ever learned doing anything else, and Dude, you’ll meet the coolest people!”

From an early age, Music and I already had quite the relationship. I grew up listening to literally anything I could find on the radio or a cassette tape. I became quite the patron of the ‘90s alternative’ sound, and I absolutely loved to dissect the recordings and listen to what each instrument was doing. While a lot of groups in that era that almost ran together, one band called Athenaeum positively floored me. They were the total package of strong, meaningful lyrics intertwined with unforgettable melodies and guitar playing. I couldn’t get enough. I remember thinking I would do anything to make those kinds of sounds, I wanted to find my part and play it.

I’d always loved the bass guitar, particularly the Motown sound with James Jamerson’s bass lines, and decided that was going to be my instrument. After convincing my (awesome) Uncle to buy one for me, the 15 year old me was well on his way. It was nearly 3 years before I began to play in a band. I remember being excited to be a part of a ‘sound’. The years of merely listening to songs were over, now I was the song! After the first rehearsal I was hooked, and knew that this whole band thing was 100% for me, and my first actual shows only confirmed this.

I continued to gig and to pursue opportunities with different bands in the Charlotte music scene for the next several years, and really came to love watching fellow local musicians play. You learn so much about being a musician from watching someone else at a show. The pacing of the set, the stage presence of the band, the crowd interactions; these are such important details that I am so grateful I was able watch and absorb from other local artists. I remember the first time I saw Kenny Floyd perform….that man is a born entertainer. His energy was through the roof, with a voice bigger than the room the roof sat on. All eyes and ears were on Kenny. No one cared about anything else in the entire world other than what he’d say or play next. The Jon Linker Band is another local act that I greatly enjoy. Jon’s up front, honest vocal delivery is backed by an outstanding group of musicians that have a rare and obvious chemistry that is a treat to watch. I have also had the pleasure of watch Mark Kano and Mike Garrigan of Athenaeum perform. What those two musicians are able to do still floors me at 29 the same as it did at 15. Their work with the band Athenaeum, as well as their respective solo offerings still represent a ‘true North’ for me musically, and the effortlessness in which they are able to reproduce these songs I hold dear in a live environment is remarkable. They are the catalysts for my journey as a musician, and I respect them to the utmost degree.

So all this led me to a truck outside a rehearsal space, listening to the group of musicians that would become Pluto for Planet. With my Dad’s advice firmly on my mind, I walked in, set my gear up, and had the single most exhilarating musical experience of my life. 3 years, many many gigs and a debut album later, my band Pluto for Planet is my second family. My gift from music.

People often ask me “What’s the best part about being a musician?” and while my typical responses are mostly (poor) attempts at humor, I can in all honesty say this: The best part of being a musician is the people I have met along the way. The friends I have made by playing in bands, going to shows, and being a part of the local music scene are both numerous and irreplaceable. My life has been enriched by the folks I have come to know and I am eternally grateful for them all.

Music is indeed a gift, and like my Dad said…I’ve met the coolest people J.

I want to thank Levin for taking time out to write this and share his experience in the local music scene with everyone.  Check out Pluto for Planet on reverbnation and check out one of their shows for an excellent night out!

Local NY Style Deli

Welcome back everyone!  I know everyone has been anxiously waiting to see what restaurant I am going to talk about next.  This restaurant is a favorite lunch time spot for me because it is fresh, good, and fast.

I am talking about Adams 7th Street Market.  They are a New York style deli off 7th Street in Charlotte.  They have an array of menu items available and have the feel of a local store as well.  They are open for breakfast and make their own croissants and butter rolls, along with breakfast sandwiches and from what I have heard some of the best grits around.

Adams also does catering for all of your party or office needs.  They have catering for breakfast as well which is good for the early morning meetings and can even set up a breakfast buffet with eggs, meat, etc. or go a little lighter with house made danishes, muffins, and bagels.  My office has used their lunch catering that is how I was first introduced to this restaurant, I had their chef salad and was immediately hooked.

For lunch today I was looking for something fresh and not overly processed so I went by Adams. Among the different daily lunch specials that were offered today I decided to go with their buffalo chicken wrap with redskin potato salad.  The wrap was made with crispy chicken not the most healthy but the flavor is worth it.  The wrap has fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, and hot sauce and I chose the spinach wrap.  The redskin potato salad is by far the best I have ever had with a fresh and creamy taste it is a must if you eat there.  They also have meats and an assortment of deli salads so you can drop in and take some home for your next meal.

If you are in the neighborhood and want a fresh meal or need a side to take home swing by Adams 7th Street Market.

Bang Bang Burgers

Today I had the opportunity to try a local restaurant I have had my eye on for over a year now.  And I am glad I decided to finally go.  The restaurant I am referring to is Bang Bang Burgers on East 7th Street in Charlotte.

From the outside of the shopping complex Bang Bang Burgers is located you may think it will be small and cramped.  In all honesty that is one of the reasons I have waited so long to go.  But upon walking in it is not as small as I thought and has ample seating for a restaurant in strip mall.  When I realized this I was super pumped to find a burger to chow down on.

The restaurant I believe would be considered fast casual but the food is definitely high end.  The fresh ingredients used and the creativity of the toppings used is artful and masterful.  Bang Bang Burgers only uses quality ingredients including high quality Black Angus whole muscle cuts such as short rib and chuck produced by Pat La Frieda out of New York City according to their website.

Today I enjoyed the Bang Bang Burger which was cooked to order another thing that is rare to find at many restaurants these days when dealing with burgers.  It was served on an awesome grilled bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and their house made pickles and Bangburger sauce.  All burgers are served with their house cut fries which are terrific and not soaked with grease like many other restaurants that offer the same.  If you are a little more health conscious you can substitute the fries for a healthier option like broccoli and garlic oil.

The presentation is fantastic as all burgers are served on a wooden board which gives the burger experience an added touch of class.  This is an awesome local establishment and are avid supporters of supporting local vendors such as the local breweries.  After all what is a good burger without an ice cold local beer!  I am adding a picture of my lunch today just so you can get a glimpse of what they have to offer.  Also a video of the chef talking a little about their meat and menu.  Do not do like I did and wait so long to experience this restaurant.  Go today!

Afton Tavern

Continuing on our culinary adventure into local restaurants brings us to a very popular Tavern in Concord.  Located in Afton Village right off I-85 in Concord Afton Tavern is the go to hangout for many in Concord.  Afton Tavern is not only a good hangout bar on the weekends but a great restaurant.

In the Summer Afton Tavern serves not only as a restaurant but a venue for live music on their patio. If you like to dine outside when the weather is nice then you will definitely want to check this place out.  Even in the cooler months they have a dual sided fireplace to enjoy the cool fall nights while enjoying the company of friends, food, and favorite drink.

There are so many different menu items that I enjoy here I could not possibly list them all.  One I enjoy the most are their chicken nachos, made with grilled chicken, house made queso, served with sour cream, pico de gallo, and jalapenos on the side.  You can also get their homemade chili with your nachos if you choose in addition to the grilled chicken but my preference is just to have the chicken.

Afton Tavern also boasts many different food and drink specials during the week.  From kids eat free on Monday and Teacher Tuesdays where all school employees get 25% off their bill with ID.  I think the most popular promotion is definitely the half price appetizers every night from 9 pm until close. So if you are out late especially on a weekend then stop by for half price apps and take advantage of their weekend drink specials while you are there too and you are guaranteed to have a great night.

A Taste of Mexico in Concord!

Welcome back everyone to another post on local restaurants in and around the CLT Metro.  As I was trying to decide which restaurant I wanted to spotlight in my post I could not narrow it down.  Then my wife suggested we go have Mexican food tonight for dinner and then it struck me, why not spotlight our go to Mexican restaurant?

While there are many to choose from in and around the area we very often find ourselves going back to Casa Grande Restaurant in Concord.  Casa Grande has three locations two in Concord and one in Salisbury.  They are committed to providing authentic flavors of Mexico to everyone that comes into the restaurant.

The service at Casa Grande is always very good and prompt.  You will not have to wait around very long once you sit and place your order.  They are always very quick and accurate with your food order which says a lot for a sit down restaurant.

My favorite dish to have at Casa Grande is the Peluza Texanas.  It has three different meats chicken, steak, and shrimp with grilled onions, peppers, mushrooms on a bed of rice topped with queso.  My wife's favorite and go to dish is the arroz con pollo, which consists of grilled chicken, on a bed of rice topped with queso.  I have had other items on the menu but always keep going back to my stand by pictured below.  If you are around Concord or Salisbury and are looking for good Mexican food stop in and find your own favorite dish.

Local Family Diner

I have chronicled different local restaurants that are good for lunch and dinner.  Not to say that the restaurant I am spotlighting is not good for lunch or dinner but I have not talked about where to get good breakfast.  As we all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why not start your day off with a good home style breakfast.

Wayside Family Restaurant is a great local restaurant to go for a great breakfast.  I like many others do not really get a chance to eat breakfast everyday like I should so on the weekends I really get cravings for good breakfast, probably because I know I have time to sit and enjoy the meal instead of grabbing a bagel or muffin and eating on the run like I have to so many times during the week.

Wayside has three locations the original in Oakboro, NC and two in Concord, NC my location of choice is the Branchview Dr location in Concord mainly because it is close to my house but they have great service and food there also.  If you go on a Saturday morning go early!  The place quickly fills up with what seems like everyone in town turning out for the same breakfast experience you are.

My favorite dish when I have breakfast there is two eggs over-easy the best way to have eggs for breakfast but that is just me.  It also comes with bacon, grits, and either a biscuit or toast.  My wife's favorite breakfast dish is a slab of livermush with rice and gravy both Southern staples at breakfast time.  We have friends from the North that have turned their nose up at the rice and gravy at first but once they tried it they were hooked, to get or even try something like that you have to go to a local restaurant like Wayside.  So if you are looking for a great breakfast place that is local look no further than Wayside Family Restaurant.

Nothing But Noodles!

The title says it all.  Who doesn't like pasta!  I know that is one of my favorite foods.  One of my new favorite restaurants for pasta is Nothing But Noodles with two locations in Charlotte.  The location I visited is in the Elizabeth neighborhood just two doors down from the Visulite Theater on Elizabeth Avenue.  They also have another location located in the Stonecrest Center off Rea Road in Charlotte.

Walking into the restaurant and looking at the menu board can be a little daunting if you are not expecting it.  They have pasta dishes from around the globe from American, Italian, and Asian.  And if you are for some reason not in the mood for pasta, and I do not know why you wouldn't be they have other options for you.  They have an array of different salad options for you and if you need they also have a gluten free menu.

One of my favorite pasta dishes here is the Spicy Cajun Pasta.  With any pasta dish you can add different meats including tofu and different vegetable options.  The Spicy Cajun Pasta has penne pasta with onions and bell peppers and topped with a spicy tomato cream sauce and fresh scallions.  I am a huge fan of spicy food and this is my go to dish when I need my spicy food fix.  I have also had the opportunity to have the beef stroganoff with egg noodles tender beef, sauteed mushrooms, and a rich cream sauce.

Nothing But Noodles is a great alternative to fast food and have taken the meaning of fast-casual to the next level.  Their food is prepared fresh while waiting you can see the cooks creating fresh sauces that will top the array of pasta dishes.  But don't forget dessert!  They may be known for their pasta but don't let them fool you they have a great selection of dessert options as well.  A personal favorite is the Ultimate Chocolate Cake it is a thick decadent piece of chocolate cake with a rich chocolate icing.  A definite must for any chocolate lover!  If you are around any of their two locations around lunch or dinner time stop in and have a great fresh meal instead of that boring fast food meal.

Stone Table

As I continue on my culinary travels today I stumbled upon a hidden gem in Monroe, NC.  I was in Monroe for a business lunch today where this restaurant was suggested we go.  As I am not from Monroe and the people I was meeting with were local's I was interested to see what they would suggest.

They suggested a local restaurant called Stone Table located in downtown Monroe.  I quickly jumped at the opportunity when I found out it was a completely local restaurant and followed their lead to the Stone Table.  Located in the middle of downtown Monroe next to an actual record store I was excited to see what this restaurant had in store.

As we walked up there were several tables outside and on a day like today allows you to take your dining experience to the next level.  Upon walking inside the line to order at the counter was stretched back to the door, I knew I was in for a treat.  Behind the counter is a huge open kitchen where you can actually see the fresh local ingredients being used like the fresh watermelon or granny smith apples being cut for the fruit cup.

Looking at the chalk board with the menu listed on it I was trying to decide and upon a suggestion from one of the guy's I was with I went with the hot roast beef sandwich.  I had all preconceived notions on what this roast beef sandwich was going to have on it such as lettuce, tomato, mayo, etc.  But to my surprise it was served on a brioche bun with tender pieces of fresh roast beef, well seasoned onion straws which I am usually not a fan of but for this it worked to my surprise.  It also had a horseradish sauce and melted cheese but the curve ball and most surprising ingredient was the fresh made coleslaw.  It was not saturated in mayo but rather had a light vinegar base to it, I have never had coleslaw on a roast beef sandwich but with all the other ingredients it was fantastic!

I hate I was not able to quickly snap a picture of this artfully prepared sandwich but I do believe I will be back for another culinary experience.  If you are looking for something truly local using local ingredients go check out Stone Table in Monroe, NC you will not be disappointed.

Local Band to Watch!

Hello again!  I realized I have not posted anything about any local music or bands like I have intended to do.  I have to admit I was a bit consumed with all of the local restaurants around but local music is another passion of mine.  Hey who doesn't like music?

With that being said and full disclosure I do not the members of this band but I believe I hold no bias in showcasing the band Pluto for Planet.  Even if I did not know them I would still write about their band because they are true artistic performers.  This is not your typical band you may see on a weekend in a bar doing covers of songs.  They are truly artists and do write their own songs and the artistry shows in their lyrics.  Not to say they do not do some great covers of songs including my favorite Ms. Jackson by Outkast complete with the rap portion in tact, not everyday you see that out of a rock band!

Some say Rock music is dead or dying but this band helps renew my love for Rock music every time I see them perform.  With inventive sounds and influences by modern and southern rock are evident in all of the songs they perform and even put their own spin on modern rock songs they might cover during a show.

So if you are looking for some great music this weekend head over and check out the Pluto for Planet page on reverbnation.  You can listen to their original songs and check out their show schedule for a great and fun night out!  Check out one of their original songs "Open Window" and one of my favorite covers "Sail" by Awolnation.

Dish

Continuing spotlighting some of my favorite local restaurants my culinary travels led me to another favorite spot today for lunch.  Located in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood in Charlotte sits a small restaurant called Dish.  In this diverse neighborhood you will find people of all walks gathering for a common reason good food!

According to Dish's website the history of the building dates back to the 1950's when it was home Ho Toy restaurant Charlotte's first Asian restaurant.  The restaurant continued to be operated until the late 1990's and was then leased to a few other restaurants that were short lived.  In March of 2002 Dish leased the space and opened that July and has been a mainstay in the neighborhood since.

Dish's menu is classified Southern Comfort Food.  You will definitely find that on the menu with dishes such as Chicken and Dumplings, Fried Green Tomatoes, Pimento and Cheese, and my personal favorite
the Cajun Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes.  The Cajun Meatloaf is an awesome take on a Southern classic.  The Cajun Meatloaf is served on top of Mashed redskin potatoes and your a side of your choice I recommend the Mac and Cheese or the Green Beans.  The meatloaf and potatoes are topped with a savory and spicy Cajun red sauce with just enough bite to it without making it overwhelming.  All entrees are served with a scratch made biscuit brushed with a sweet melted honey butter.

Dish not only has great Southern food but has an array of vegetarian options on the menu, so there is really something for everyone.  Dish also has a bar in the back serving signature cocktails and hosting beer from local breweries on draft along with all of the domestic favorites.  Dish has been featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and you can see where host Guy Fieri signed their wall!  This is definitely a melting-pot location and never know who you may run into all in pursuit of great food!

The picture below is the Cajun Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes with Mac and Cheese I had for lunch today.  (I took the picture after I started to dig in and do not really do the plate presentation justice even though I tried to salvage it.)

Family Fun!

The Summer marks the end of school and the start of vacations.  With the longer days what better way to wind down the day and beat the heat than to go check out Paparobb's Paradise Ice.  This is a extremely fun environment to enjoy an array of ice cream flavors they offer or one of their flavorful Paradise Ices or Pops.

Pulling into Paparobb's the building is painted in vibrant tropical colors with lush green plants around making you feel like you have found a tropical oasis.  They are one of the few places I have seen that cater to families and making sure they have a fun and safe environment.  This one of a kind place is a great place to bring the kids especially during the day when the kids will soon be out of school for the Summer.

Paparobb's also has a playground along with a huge area with picnic tables with tropical colored umbrella's to add to their theme.  They also have a party area where you can have your child's birthday party in a secure fun family environment.  Paparobb's also has a mobile set up that is featured sometimes at the Food Truck Friday event in Concord, they can also come to you for parties or corporate events if you can't make it there.  With events featured throughout the week from open mic night to dj's you are guaranteed to have a great time no matter what age.  For more information you can check out Paparobb's website where you can follow them on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest happenings.

Cool off on a hot day

As Summer is in full swing and the days are heating up many are looking somewhere to go to cool off.  I say what better place to go than an Ice Cream shop.  I have the perfect local spot for you to go cool off on a hot Summer day.

Located in Historic Downtown Concord sits a local legend in Ice Cream.  I am talking about the Cabarrus Creamery anyone from Concord or the surrounding area knows about the ice cream.  Many have been going to get ice cream from the Cabarrus Creamery since they were kids.

With a long history in the Concord area the Creamery has been a staple in the area for decades.  They have kept their original recipes throughout the years and even through an ownership change back in 2003.  The quality of the product has not diminished and the flavors taste the same as they did when I went there as a kid.  If you go on a weekend be prepared to wait in line as a part of the experience is waiting in the lines that can stretch down the sidewalk.  If you are looking for great ice cream with a local hometown feel look no further than the Cabarrus Creamery.

Real Italian Food in Concord

If you are looking for some really good Italian food around the Concord area look no further than Gianni's Trattoria.  This restaurant is as authentic as it gets.  The restaurant is run by a New York native and restaurateur who brought his chef with him to Concord to open this awesome Italian restaurant.

The ambiance of the restaurant is located in an old bar in the historic district in downtown Concord. The restaurant still has the original bar and tin ceiling which gives the restaurant a very rustic Italian feel.  The dim lighting makes it an awesome venue for a romantic evening or even for a celebratory dinner.

If the upscale type atmosphere is not your thing then you can head upstairs to the pizza loft.  Gianni's is not only serving really great old style Italian food but also churning out pizza's upstairs.  Upstairs has the feel of sports bar really laid back with its own bar and kitchen.  So if you want to have a more laid back night head upstairs and get yourself an authentic New York style pizza and grab your favorite beer or wine.

Another great thing about this local restaurant is their menu which is seasonal.  The chef creates a very flavorful and artistic menu with the food that is in season.  You cannot go wrong whether you want to have a pizza or more traditional fare.  Check out their Facebook page and learn more about the restaurant and see pictures of their fantastic food.

Fortune Cookie

Tucked away in a small shopping center on Charlottetowne Ave. in Charlotte is a hidden gem on the local Chinese food scene.  I have been to a few local Chinese restaurants around the area but none compare to the Fortune Cookie.  Not only are the prices right but the flavor of their food is off the charts!

No matter what you decide to eat you will not be disappointed with the authentic Chinese flavors in the food.  It is a small place so if you are going for lunch go early so you will be able to find parking and a table it is also across from CPCC so when the semester is in full swing it really gets busy.  My favorite is the General Tso's Chicken, it is a spicy dish but not overwhelming but also not too sweet like many other places.

This is one of my favorite places to grab a quick lunch.  Not only can you get quality food but it is extremely affordable.  Most lunch specials you have to choose from ring in under $10 including a drink.  It is hard to find that combination of quality and affordability at any restaurant now days.

Below is a picture of my lunch today which sparked the inspiration for my post.  Whether for lunch or dinner it is a great local place to eat great Chinese food.  Click here for their full website with locations and menu.

Taste of Charlotte

Summer is in the air and local food festivals are gearing up!  One of my personal favorites is the annual Taste of Charlotte festival.  Taking place on Tryon Street in uptown Charlotte you could not ask for a better environment to sample fare from local restaurants all in one place.  Admission to the festival is free but you will have to purchase coins to sample food.  Spanning 5 city blocks the festival not only lets you experience the best in local food but also allows you to experience local bands on two stages with many other activities perfect for the whole family.

For the more health conscious they have not forgotten about you!  On Saturday the festival will kick-off at 9 am with the 2nd Annual Corona Light Race to the Taste 5K.  There is also the Cupcake Run/Walk for those who want to get their exercise but also have something sweet to go along with it. Participants of the Cupcake Run/Walk will be able to sample multiple cupcakes from several local bakeries throughout the course.  Not a bad way to start off a Saturday morning!

This is by far my favorite event to attend during the Summer.  While there are chain restaurants there for you to sample many are local and allow you to experience new cuisine if you might be unsure about a certain restaurant.  Not to mention they have a Tavern at the festival so you can enjoy your favorite beer or wine while sampling some fantastic food.  Load up the family and make your way to Uptown Charlotte this weekend and truly experience all that local food has to offer!

For complete details and information check out the Taste of Charlotte website here.

Welcome!

I know this may seem a little backwards but I want to welcome you to my blog capturing local flavors in and around the Charlotte Metro area.  When I talk about flavors I am not only talking about restaurants but also some local bands that you may not have heard of.
For me supporting local just makes sense whether it be restaurants or musicians.  Not only do I believe you get a better product when supporting local than you do with a huge corporation but it helps generate jobs and support local economies.  Supporting local gives you a more personalized experience and from my experience getting to know the business owners and even bands that play locally you can experience a person's true talent whether it be for cooking great food or playing fantastic music.
I hope everyone that visits this blog will be able to check out some of the suggestions that are posted.  I want to capture the essence of everything local has to offer.  I welcome you on this journey as we embark on finding and experiencing the local flavors in and around the Charlotte Metro area and encourage you to explore and find a hidden gem of your own.

Need a New Lunch Spot?

Whether you live or work in Charlotte or even the surrounding area and need a new lunch spot, I would suggest Crisp.  Crisp is a fresh new take on lunch or even dinner and even better all locations are local!  The local food movement is growing rapidly and everyone is paying more attention to what they are eating and what better way to start than by checking out this local spot.  I have visited the location on Seventh Street in Charlotte while it is small the environment is very upbeat and surprisingly fast from order to receiving your food.  You walk in the front door to a long salad bar and two chefs working the line with their tongs and stainless bowls ready to customize your salad anyway you want.  You have the pick of the freshest ingredients that are constantly being replenished because of the sheer volume of people walking in for a fresh and fantastic meal.  If salads are not your thing Crisp also has sandwiches which are some of the best I have tasted my favorite is the Chophouse with grilled steak and caramelized onions, fresh romaine lettuce, provolone cheese, and a very scrumptious horseradish remoulade.  They also boast daily soups and pizzas at the Seventh Street location only.  If you are in a rut and cannot figure out where to eat whether it be lunch or dinner try one of Crisp's locations I promise the drive will be worth it.

Check out their website with locations and complete menu.
